The Legacy of Ceylon Gemstones

A journey of earth, tradition, and light

For over two thousand years, Sri Lanka (historically known as Ceylon) has been celebrated as one of the world’s most treasured sources of natural gemstones. The island was also known in Sanskrit as “Ratna Deepa,” meaning “Island of Gems,” reflecting its ancient reputation for extraordinary natural gemstone wealth. From royal courts and ancient trade routes to modern luxury jewellery houses, Ceylon gemstones continue to be admired for their exceptional colour, brilliance, and rarity.

The name Ceylon itself has become globally associated with some of the finest sapphires ever discovered. Even today, the term “Ceylon Sapphire” represents prestige, authenticity, and timeless beauty in the international gemstone industry.

A Gem Island Known Through History

Sri Lanka’s gemstone heritage dates back over two thousand years, making the island one of the oldest continuously known gem-producing regions in the world. Throughout history, the island attracted traders, explorers, kings, and empires seeking its legendary sapphires and precious stones.

Known historically by names such as TaprobaneSerendib, and later Ceylon, Sri Lanka was strategically located along ancient maritime trade routes connecting Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. These trade networks helped Sri Lankan gemstones reach royal courts and civilizations across the ancient world.

Greek and Roman writers referred to Sri Lanka as Taprobane, describing it as a prosperous island rich in natural treasures.

Historical ports such as Matota (Mannar), Gokanna (Trincomalee), and later Kolomtota (Colombo) became major centers of maritime trade, where gemstones, pearls, spices, and other luxury goods were exchanged between ancient civilizations across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

For centuries, merchants from Persia, India, China, and Europe traveled to Sri Lanka in search of its legendary gemstones. Many famous royal jewellery collections around the world contain gemstones believed to have originated from the gem-rich lands of Sri Lanka.

In ancient Greek and Roman societies, sapphires were rare luxury gemstones associated with wisdom, divine favour, and high status, often worn by elites as symbols of wealth and authority, including in engraved rings used for sealing documents.

This tradition of valuing sapphires continued into medieval Europe, where sapphire rings became even more strongly linked with kingship, church authority, and spiritual protection. Across both periods, sapphires consistently represented prestige, power, and a connection to higher or divine forces.

"The island of Ceylon is, for its size, the finest island in the world, and from its streams come rubies, sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and garnets."

— Marco Polo, 1292 AD

Timeless Value of Ceylon Gemstones

Sri Lanka is one of the world’s most celebrated sources of natural coloured gemstones, internationally renowned for producing exceptional sapphires and precious stones admired for centuries.

The island is especially famous for Sapphires, Rubies, Spinel, Garnet, Tourmaline, Zircon, Chrysoberyl, Cat’s Eye, Moonstone, Topaz, Amethyst, Citrine, Aquamarine, and many more.

Among them, the legendary Ceylon Blue Sapphire is considered one of the world’s finest gemstones due to its vivid royal blue colour, exceptional brilliance, and crystal clarity.

Sri Lankan sapphires have appeared in some of the world’s most famous jewellery collections, especially in Royal jewelry collection including the iconic blue sapphire engagement ring worn by Princess Diana and later by Kate, Princess of Wales.

Ceylon gemstones are highly valued for their:

  • Natural vibrant colour
  • Excellent brilliance and transparency
  • Superior crystal quality
  • Wide range of rare gemstone varieties
  • Traditional and ethical mining heritage

Unlike many commercial gemstones, Sri Lankan gemstones are appreciated for their elegant natural appearance and lighter, more vibrant tones that reflect light beautifully.

The value of a gemstone is influenced by colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, rarity, and origin. Ceylon origin is recognized globally as a mark of quality and prestige.

Formed naturally over millions of years, every gemstone is unique. Beyond luxury and investment, Ceylon gemstones represent history, craftsmanship, rarity, and timeless natural beauty passed through generations.
